    Overview

Sara Jodka (Member, Columbus) was quoted in an article for TheLaw.com titled “Amazon Risks Legal Gray Area by Indefinitely Holding Alexa Recordings.” The article discusses a recent admission by Amazon that when an Alexa personal assistant is spoken to, the device’s smart speaker doesn’t always delete transcripts of conversations, even if users manually delete the recording. Sara discussed the potential liabilities the company could face if recording in two-party consent states, as well as her theory on a possible purpose for the conversations collected by Alexa.

“The more human conversations it collects its technology continues to learn and become almost human in nature,” Sara said. “I think the information they [Amazon] collect for Alexa is going to be used to make those other platforms more functional to know the consumer DNA of the people who use Alexa and Amazon in general.”
